Tahawus is the original Native
American name for Mount Marcy meaning the
"Mountain in the Clouds". A licensed
Adirondack guide service founded by Joe
Hackett in 1978, Tahawus offers
traditional outdoor adventures for people
of all ages, regardless of ability level
or physical condition. Based on the
legendary guide services of the late
1800's, the guides of Tahawus are
experienced outdoor professionals who will
delight you with the natural history and
lore of the Adirondacks.
Joe Hackett's background includes a lifetime
of outdoor experience in the Adirondacks,
as well as a Masters Degree in Education.
His thesis project, a Staff Development
and Team Training Program is still in use
at several major institutions. His
executive retreats and team training
programs are utilized extensively by
corporate groups and he has served as an
adventure training instructor for both the
U.S. and British Armed Forces. A renowned
storyteller, Joe also functions as a
location scout and authenticity consultant
for film and commercial projects featuring
outdoor sporting scenes. Recognized as a
founder of the New York State Outdoor
Guides Association, Joe has developed a
reputation for fly fishing remote waters.
