CANOE & GUIDEBOAT TOURS

The Adirondacks offer one of the most extensive canoe route systems in the country. The canoe routes complete a natural highway that crisscrosses the Adirondacks for more than 150 miles of continuous lake and river travel through scenic mountain hamlets and vast wilderness areas.

Our tours take into consideration the wilderness interests and physical abilities of the participants and range from gentle river floats on a day trip basis to extended Adirondack traverses.

Tahawus has two restored antique 35-foot War Canoes based on Lake Placid lake. These unique water craft were manufactured by The Old Town Canoe Co. at the turn of the century and have been faithfully restored to their original condition. Reminiscent of the Voyager or Trader canoes in use during the fur trade era, these boats were designed to transport people and heavy loads of gear over vast distances. The opportunity now exists for you to experience the camaraderie and excitement of that period on the waterways of the Adirondacks. With 12 seats, the canoes each can accommodate up to 16 paddlers. Although noted for swiftness, their main appeal is outstanding stability and ease of use, which allows anyone to experience the joy of canoeing. Ideal for families and groups, the canoes are available for daily tours of Lake Placid, including island picnics and sunset excursions. We will also transport these canoes to other Adirondack waters for receptions and corporate programs.

The guideboat, a watercraft unique to the Adirondacks, was developed by guides in the late 1800's. A cross between a canoe and a rowboat, they are designed to be easily handled by one person yet seat three comfortably. Our restored antique wooden boats glide smoothly across the water and take the swells easily. Often admired for their beauty, the guideboat is the ideal sportsman's craft that affords a return to a traditional mode of travel on Adirondack waterways.
