A Birding Haven

Do not move! Right outside your handcrafted lodging door.
Stroll our 22 acres with walking trails or simply immerse yourself in our 3-acre lakeshore. The Lodge is in such a Mecca for birding that a young Theodore Roosevelt wrote a book on birding that exist just in our own County: The Summer Birds in the Adirondacks in Franklin County New York. The Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center (5 minutes from the Lodge) has an on-going self-guided tour to commemorate this event. This impression was not lost on him and as President he created a National Park Service and the National Forest System.
We see many wonderful birds right on our property including eagles, peregrine falcons, osprey, hawks, warblers, ducks and of course our Lake Clear family of loons. In late spring warblers in all colors arrive; songbirds including kingbirds, flycatchers, grosbeaks, waxwings, thrushes, wrens and sparrows, kingfishers, herons, owls especially the barred, wild turkeys and Canadian geese are just a sampling of what you may see!

Self-guided experiences and formal events.
The St. Regis Wilderness region is becoming recognized as a birding sanctuary. As such there is a multitude of self-guided experiences and formal events.

Formal Events
The Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center, seven minutes from the Lodge, has ongoing birding programs throughout the year. This includes guided walks, guest lectures, exhibits and an on-going Theodore Roosevelt Birding Challenge. A highlight is the June Birding Festival that Hohmeyer’s Lake Clear Lodge co-sponsors. www.adirondackvic.org.

The Natural History Museum in Tupper Lake (25 minutes from the Lodge) also offers both in-door and out-side birding celebrations. www.wildcenter.org.

Self-guided Experiences Interested in a diverse birding experience? You can hike, bike, canoe, drive or simply stroll and see a multitude of incredible scenery from marshes to mountain views and an associated variety of bird species. From right outside your handcrafted lodging door to within a 5 minute drive: a birding haven.

A few scintillating samples:

Jones Pond, Church Pond and the Osgood River. While we have not seen all of these it is reported that Jones Pond that you may see heron, osprey, wood ducks and eagles. Church Pond is accessible off Rt. 86 in Paul Smiths and an excellent birding area with black duck, hooded merganser, mallard, osprey, sharp-shinned hawk, red-tailed hawk, great blue heron ruffled grouse and many more reported. In the Osgood River gray jays, boreal chickadees, spruce grouse, crossbills, red winged blackbirds, green warblers, white throat sparrows have been sighted.

Climb Azure Mountain - roughly 2 hours roundtrip where it is reported that state officials have released young falcons

Lower St. Regis Lake that is home of some of the most beautiful Adirondack Great camps including the former Merriweather Post Camp of Post Cereal as well as the headwater of the St. Regis River. We believe we have seen sightings of the three-toed woodpecker and the gray jay.

In Green and Little Clear Pond (no fishing or camping) we have seen ospreys and loons

In the Saranac chain of lakes we have seen red-winged blackbirds, variety of ducks including black and ring billed, chickadees, crows, winter wrens, white throated sparrows, hermit thrush, spotted sandpiper, grackle, various kinds of warblers, robins and red-eyed vireos.

The Lydia Pond Esker between Fish and Little Long Ponds is a nesting area alive with birdsong with the white-throated sparrow, wood thrush, ovenbird and warblers among many others.

Please note that Cathy and I are foremost innkeepers, not orthanologists and though we grew up here and love birding, the above should be regarded as descriptive information only and needs to be verified through direct resource information or certified guides. Copies of these as well as a list of guides can be found at the Lodge. The above information comes from our observations and reading several excellent resources including:

  • ADK Adirondack Canoe Waters North Flow by Paul Jamieson and Donald Morris.
  • Quiet Water Canoe Guide New York Appalachian Mountain Club by John Hayes and Alex Wilson
  • Franklin County Tourism: www.adirondacklakes.com/birding. This site has an excellent birding section that includes searches you can undertake for specific birds and free maps
