Our Lodge & home was built in 1886 by Cathy's Great Aunt & Uncle as a trading post and post office (the back of the house is actually the front and the paved road that takes you by the Lake was actually the main highway). Another side of her family ran one of the earliest boarding houses just down the road. The recipes on the Adirondack side go back over 100 years.
Cathy's family sold the Lodge to another family who ran the Inn in the summer months until 1955. In 1965 Ernest's family bought the Inn and converted it to a year round facility. Ernest's family is all of German/European decent and were involved with Guesthouses going back to the medieval ages (Hoh - meyer: overseer of the manor). Some of the recipes on Ernest's side are of such old Gothic writing they are almost unreadable.
Unaware of Cathy's relationship to the Lodge, Ernest and Cathy met in elementary school while Ernest was telling her a joke about marriage. Cathy promptly fell off the slide and broke her wrist. Needless to say conversation was short for many years including when Cathy worked for the Hohmeyer seniors during high school.
As Ernest was completing postgraduate work (in international relations to be able to go back to Europe) his father became ill. Coming back to help with the Lodge for the summer, fate stuck again. It became apparent that the Hohmeyer Srs. would not be able to continue and the Lodge became under contract for sale. On Mr. Hohmeyer Srs. birthday, Cathy appeared. She had come home (from running a successful occupational therapy business in Washington) to help her Dad who became stricken with cancer (he was one of the Adirondack's finest woodworkers). Cathy's Dad recuperated and returning to her roots, the idea of being in the Inn business beckoned. A 6-month lease to test the waters began. Incredulously, Ernest had found a job in his field (this is the Adirondacks remember) and became the founding director of the Adirondack Economic Development Corporation, which has evolved into the Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Tourism.
Combining recipes from the Old World and the Adirondack Pioneer days with a strong mixture of love and family - we welcome you to our home and the spirit, which creates our Adirondack Alps Cuisine.
Sincerely,
Cathy and Ernest Hohmeyer
Cathy and Ernest Hohmeyer, proprietors, chef, Mom and Dad (of three) and best friends
